the get out issue, no. 10

FOR THE TENTH ISSUE, I wanted to focus on the great outdoors, and so we searched for and found eight individuals, who embraced the great outdoors and made it their way of life. We interviewed Kelly McCaughey, a fearless woman and the founder of Over and Out, an all-female bike club based in the Catskills. Our executive editor, Michael Mundy, met with Jennifer Pharr Davis, a world-renowned long-distance hiker and the record holder for the fastest hike on the Appalachian Trail. We followed Laura Silverman of The Outside Institute on a foraging excursion and discovered there’s more than meets the eye. We ate through bushels of vivid greens harvested by Greg Swartz, who operates one of the largest organic farms in the region. Our associate editor, Alexandra Marvar, hesitantly accompanied three iconic fly fishing pros, Todd Spire, Joe Fox, and Joan Wulff (after lamenting, “But I don’t know anything about fly fishing!”). And finally, we visited the home of cover girl Anna Aberg and her fiancé, Tom Roberts, where they run the very fashionable Livingston Manor Fly Fishing Club, an Instagram-ready social club based on reconnecting with nature. These adventurers have shared not only their own experiences of the outdoors but inspiration for people like me on how to bring more “outside” back into our indoor-centric lives, from biking to hiking, fishing to foraging.
